Termite colonies are initiated when a swarm of winged male and female reproductives leave a mature nest, usually in April in the Northeast. These termites pair off, shed their wings and excavate a nest in or near a source of wood. After making a suitable chamber, the pair mates and the female begins laying eggs. The eggs hatch within a few weeks and the larvae will mature over a period of several months. Most of the larvae will become workers or soldiers. When the nest reaches its maximum population some of the new larvae will mature into winged reproductives and the cycle is repeated.
